Honorable Mention
Means of Grace
Dale McLain

I have watched the boatwright.
He is patient and has a strong hand.
His planes smooth the mahogany
that will cut across the water.
His work is slow and perfect
as he lays the hull with battens.
This boat will be a true and solid thing
in an element of change.

If I can build a boat
anything is possible.
I will begin with the long night moon
and let the sea determine its worth.
Wind, weather and wave
will not be persuaded
by my bright work.
The water beneath me will be salt.

I will build one fine boat,
a graceful tender in quartering seas
with sails too beautiful
to look at against the blue.

At the righting moment
you will see me windward.
